The USS North Carolina memorial is actually, obviously, in North Carolina, but it is within driving distance of Myrtle Beach (60 miles, so about an hour away - maybe 45 minutes if you're in North Myrtle Beach). Many people who are history buffs make the trip, so I've included a page on it just because it is a very interesting site that is nearby and worth the trip if you're into war history.
The North Carolina is actually a series of ships that have held that name, ranging from a ship-of-the-line in the 1800's (a big, wooden warship) to an ironclad fighting for the Confederacy during the Civil War to a World War II battleship (the focus of the memorial) to a modern submarine.
The most interesting one of these was the battleship that fought during World War II in the Pacific. It fought it every major offensive in the Pacific Theater, often playing a crucial role in protecting major aircraft carriers from Japanese aerial attacks, shooting down dozens of planes in the process. It also bombarded shore positions and sunk a troop transport. The ship was scheduled to be scrapped, but citizens of North Carolina mounted a successful campaign to turn it into a war memorial.
The memorial is filled with historical information and exhibits, and can take a couple of hours to go through. It's open for most of the day during the entire year. You can get directions from pretty much any nearby location on their web page here. The main site for the memorial is online here, and you can find much more information on the ship, its history, and tourism / souvenir info.
