Camping in Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach
certainly boasts plenty of hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals, but many
families, couples, and individuals who head to the area for a visit take
advantage of the camping opportunities available along the Grand Strand.
Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas indeed offer a
wealth of campgrounds. Some are fairly basic, many have lots of amenities.
Some are privately owned, others are located in state parks. That means the
vacationer has a large number of options from which to choose, with camping
accommodations available in a variety of price ranges.
Those traveling by RV/camper or those who’d like to
tent camp can choose accommodations that are just a stone’s throw from the
beach or others that are a bit off-the-beaten-track. Many of the campgrounds
include perks like pools and hot tubs, game rooms, and other activities, and
most provide basic necessities like hot showers, clean rest rooms, dump
stations, grocery stores, and more.
State Parks
Two popular state parks in the
Myrtle Beach
area allow visitors to camp on the premises. They include:
?
Myrtle Beach
State Park – This pretty state park
offers plenty of room for campers, with slots for RVs up to 30 and 40 feet
long. Just 300 yards from the beach, the Myrtle
Beach
State Park campground features water
and electricity hook-ups, tent sites, hot showers, restrooms, laundry
facilities, and a camp store that sells groceries, souvenirs, firewood, and
camping supplies. Reservations are accepted and are suggested during busy
times of the year.
?
Huntington Beach
State Park – This park offers sites
for RVs of up to 40 feet and for tents as well. RV sites include water and
electricity hook ups. Tent pads and central water are available to those who
are tent camping. A primitive group camping area is also available for
groups of up to 200. A dump station is onsite and the campground is
convenient to hot showers and restrooms. There is no camp store on site,
however. Reservations are accepted and suggested.
Privately-owned
Campgrounds
Though many of the privately-owned campgrounds in
Myrtle Beach are HUGE, boasting hundreds of
campsites, they do fill up quickly, especially in the summer. Reservations
are strongly suggested, especially if you wish to secure a site near the
beach.
?
Ocean
Lakes
Family Campground – Recently named a “National RV Park of the Year
(2008-2009), this attractive campground opened in 1970 with just 30
campsites. Today, it includes 893 campsites and 2,554 annual lease sites on
310 oceanfront acres with nearly one mile of beachfront for guests to enjoy.
In season, some 25,000-35,000 guests are staying at
Ocean
Lakes on any given day! Amenities
include multiple indoor and outdoor pools, a “splash zone”, game rooms; the
Camptown
Center featuring a huge market,
restaurant, and laundry facilities; a nature center; a church with
non-denominational weekly worship; playgrounds; and a recreation building.
Reservations are strongly suggested.
?
Lakewood Camping Resort – The first
privately-owned campground on the Grand Strand, Lakewood includes
1,100 campsites, 105 rental
villas and more than 790 villas owned by individuals from all around the
country. It’s located on 200 acres of oceanfront property. Amenities include
an organized kids’ club; bicycle, kayak, and pedal boat rental; a “hippo”
water slide; playgrounds; pools; mini-golf; basketball courts; and even the
“Theater by the Sea”, which presents shows and hosts teen dances and other
events. There is also a Christian ministry program here but guests are not
required to participate, of course.
?
Myrtle Beach Travel Park – This 125-acre campground/resort includes more
than 800 campsites and ocean villa or travel trailer rentals as well.
Amenities include hot showers; laundry facilities; a stocked, freshwater
lake; restaurant and snack bar; recreation room and pavilion; swimming pool
with deck; gift shop; chapel and campground minister; full-time recreation
director; and much more. Organized activities are available year round for
both kids and adults. The Guests Services Dept. can help secure attraction
tickets at a reduced price.
?
Apache Family Campground and Pier – Boasting the East Coast’s longest pier,
this popular campground has been in operation for nearly 40 years. It
includes back-in and pull-through sites that are located along the beach or
in a wooded area. All include full hook-ups. Amenities and activities
include live entertainment, pools, an indoor arcade, fishing tournaments,
dances, and so much more. One-, two-, and three-bedroom rental units are
also available for those without RVs. Like most Myrtle Beach campgrounds,
this one is also open year-round.
