How do I get to Myrtle Beach?

Throughout much of the late part of the 20th century, Myrtle Beach grew as a vacation destination. Now, in the 21st century, it has become one of the most popular beach areas on the East Coast, attracting guests from up and down the seaboard as well as from the Midwest and even further. The destination also has its share of foreign visitors each year.

If you’re heading to Myrtle Beach for your next vacation, chances are you’re looking for the best way to get there. There are indeed a number of options.

By Plane

Myrtle Beach has its very own international airport which serves as the principal commercial airport for the Grand Strand area and can also accommodate private planes. Located at the south end of town, those who arrive at Myrtle Beach International can be at their hotel in literally minutes after they land and retrieve their luggage and rental car.

There are a number of major airlines that fly to Myrtle Beach including Continental, US Airways, Delta, Northwest, Spirit, and United Express. A handful of smaller airlines, like Allegiant and Comair, also land at this airport. Direct service is offered from a number of major cities such as New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Atlantic City, Boston, and Charlotte. Nine different rental car companies, including all the major ones, operate booths at or near the airport. Several taxi companies are also on hand to transport arriving passengers to their hotel and then back to the airport at the end of their trip.

Additional options include the Charleston International Airport, which is about a 2-hour drive from Myrtle Beach. Two smaller airports, the Grand Strand Airport and the Conway-Horry County Airport, accommodate private and corporate aircraft.

By Train

There is no Amtrak station in Myrtle Beach. However, potential rail passengers can catch a train to Florence, SC, which is about 70 miles from Myrtle Beach, or to Charleston, about 90 miles away. From Charleston, visitors can hop a Greyhound Bus to Myrtle Beach, but from Florence, passengers must arrange for private limo service as there is no Greyhound station.

By Bus

Because there is indeed a Greyhound station in Myrtle Beach, it’s possible to travel there by bus from many destinations around the country. Consult Greyhound for a list of available routes.

By Automobile

If you’re heading to Myrtle Beach in your family car, it isn’t terribly hard to reach this beach destination. From the north or south, visitors can travel on Interstate 95 and then head east towards the coast. From the Midwest, it’s a little tougher to reach Myrtle Beach but the state continues to expand the I-73 corridor to assist travelers. Still, this wonderful family destination is within a day’s drive of many major cities – Knoxville and Atlanta are just 6 hours away, Washington D.C. is just 7 hours by car, Philadelphia and Cincinnati are a 10 hour drive, and New York is 11 hours away.
