Magiquest in Myrtle Beach

Magiquest is basically a Harry Potter style amusement area located in Myrtle Beach that is mainly geared towards kids. It's a pretty huge area - 20,000 square feet. The theme is based on dragons, wizards, ogres, that sort of thing. You buy a wand (a little electronic device that you can use to interact with stuff in the park). The wand costs about $10, and you get to keep it. It looks like an actual magic wand, and they have a variety of different kinds. You can also buy various other accessories, but the wand is the only thing you really need to play. You get assigned various quests to complete, and the wand will store your progress if you want to play awhile and then come back later. It costs about $8 an hour to actually play.

Once you get quests, you complete them by going around the kingdom and finding out what you're supposed to do. There are castles, dungeons, a Stonehenge-like thing, and all kinds of stuff to explore. When you complete a quest, you get a "rune" which gives your wand more "powers" (allowing it to do more stuff). You can also zap various things (treasure chests, monster lairs, etc.) and it will give you gold, which you can use to buy various wizard-themed toys and junk at the gift shop. If you're one of the older folks, think Skeeball tickets - the wand stores how much gold you've earned on it, and you can trade it in electronically.

At the Myrtle Beach location, new Magi can purchase a package that includes a wand and 75 or 90 minutes of play time. The package also includes passes to the Dueling area, a one-on-one game that allows opposing Magi to “fight” each other with their wands. Those who already have wands and are returning to continue a game they already started can purchase 90 or 120 minutes of time inside the kingdom. If they have previously played in Myrtle Beach, all the progress made on earlier visits has been stored in their wand.  Groups rates are available for a minimum of 15 guests and group lock-ins are available for organizations and for birthday parties. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can even earn MagiQuest badges.

Those who want to spend their birthday at MagiQuest can choose from a few different party packages for up to 9 guests that include wands for each party-goer, an hour of play, invitations, souvenir photo, the use of an onsite party room, party products, and soft drinks. Parties should be scheduled far in advance.

MagiQuest sponsors occasional special events including concerts and dances for middle and senior high school students. Most of the events also include time allotted to play the game.

You can check out the Magiquest web site here - it's got some videos and pictures that will give you an idea of what to expect. You might also be interested in a guide to getting gold in Magiquest written by a kid who played it here.

Magiquest is located at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach. The phone number is 1-866-353-6244, and the hours are from 10 am to 9 pm.
