Sun Fun Festival in Myrtle Beach

The annual Sun Fun Festival is a gala event that has been a long time Myrtle Beach institution, attended by thousands of locals and visitors. Held in early June, the Festival is a two day-long symbolic kick-off of the summer season along the Grand Strand and also serves as the opening event for the Sun Fun Summer of Celebration, which continues from June through September.

The Sun Fun Festival and Celebration feature a host of events including several live musical concerts of a variety of different genres. Guests can also attend sporting events, a pageant, arts and crafts displays and demonstrations, celebrity meet-and-greet events, and a free kids’ zone.

The concerts of the Sun Fun Festival take place each Friday evening at the Celebrity Square at Broadway at the Beach, one of the sponsors of the event. Some additional concerts happen on Saturdays, including on the Independence Day weekend. Concerts are free of charge and generally begin at 7 pm, though starting times may vary. Guests should arrive early for a good view of the artists.

The Miss Sun Fun and Miss Sun Fun Teen Pageant are also an ongoing part of Myrtle Beach’s Sun Fun Festival. The winners of the festival represent the local chamber of commerce and travel to various events throughout their reign, including other festivals, trade shows, and legislative events. A festival event since 2005, these pageants are a preliminary to the Miss South Carolina USA and Miss South Carolina Teen USA pageants.

Numerous arts and crafts vendors come to the area to peddle their creative wares. Hundreds of locals and tourists browse their tables and take home everything from fine art to pottery to wood carvings to handmade jewelry.

On Thursdays in July and August, a Lawn Party is held at the Market Common. Guests can enjoy the bocce courts and open space in the common as well as an evening concert. Local restaurants in the Market Common area serve food and drinks under the outdoor trellis. The restaurants take turns sponsoring the events.

Mondays are KidZone Days at the Market Common. Free kids shows are presented and there’s face painting and several inflatables. A wristband allows for All you Can Jump fun as well as free kids meal with the purchase of an adult meal at area participating restaurants.

The fun ends on Labor Day weekend with the Beach, Boogie and Barbecue Festival, which takes place over a two-day period. The official South Carolina Barbecue Championship and Kansas City Barbeque Society Cook-off is part of the festival and cooks arrive from all around the region and beyond to vie for some sizeable cash prizes. The Wheels at the Beach car show also happens that weekend with prizes awarded for the finest in vintage cars.
