The Waccatee Zoo is a privately owned zoo that bills itself as the "best kept secret in Myrtle Beach." It's a 500 acre wildlife preserve that has evolved from a private collection of animals over the years. They have local animals, like egrets and heron, as well as exotic animals such as camels, parrots, zebras, water buffalo, bears, monkeys, lions, and kangaroos. They have a philosophy of avoiding the cramped, city style of zoo in favor of an open area for the animals to roam around. They have a web site here which has a few pictures of the animals and some general information. You can buy cups of food there to feed most of the animals (all but the meat eaters), and they will walk up to the edge of the enclosure to eat stuff you give them.
It's $7 for admission, and $3.50 for kids under 12. They're open 7 days a week, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The address of the Waccatee Zoo is:
8500 Enterprise Rd.
Myrtle Beach, SC 29588
Phone: 843-650-8500
You can get directions on their site here.
